L.E.A.P
•
Nurtures a core of teen-age leaders
•
Stimulates hundreds of other youth and adults to embrace education
and learning beyond the classroom
•
Transforms youth and adults into vigorous advocates pressing for
educational change in their local communities
•
Creates a collaborative synergy between youth and adults who become
a local power force
The Education
LEAP is based on the eductional
and social technology of AYA
Educational Institute.
Since 1998, our academic and
social action results among
youth and adults are simply
amazing.
1.
We combine Hi-Tech with
Hi-Touch.
2.
We combine African and
African American Culture
with expectation to
stimulate academic
excellence and social
responsibility.
3.
We actively Heal
Alienation born of
oppression and abusive
educational pratices.
Our graduates start businesses,
attend colleges and
intentionally improve the
communities in which they live.
The Presentations
LEAP sponsors, parents,
teachers, and supporters create
a small core of local AYA
students who each have 12
minutes to inspire the audience
of 150 youth and adults by their
subject mastery and engaging
delivery. Not once, not twice,
but 4 times a year – every nine
weeks - they present at the
L.E.A.P Community Education
and Advocacy conferences.
That’s 600 inspired youth and
adults per year in each local
community. Inspired to do
what?
•
To raise their hope and
expectations
•
To embrace education as
a personal goal and
community obligation
•
To advocate for real
change in local education
The Facilitation -
Discussion
Inspiration is a spark, but alone
isn’t enough. Persperation is
needed to make for lasting
change.
After the presentations,
feedback, and judging of the
youth presentations, things
really heat up.
Parents and community adults
are separated from the youth.
Both groups enter their own
safe spaces where AYA trained
facilitators fan the spark to a
flame with key questions and
discussion in two areas:
•
Education as a personal
quest (what they’ve
learned, and want to
know)
•
Advocacy for systemic
educational change
(what they don’t like
about education, what
they will do the help
change it, and what
support they will need.)
Facilitators push, dig deep,
prevent grand-standing, and
help to board responses from
each group.
